Characteristics of Successful Business Leaders

I'm often asked what I consider to be key attributes or characteristics of truly effective business leaders.
Now I could list many and might struggle to put them in priority order, but I thought I'd share my initial thoughts and start with these three.
Self-Awareness Knowing your own strengths and limitations and understanding your own emotions and the impact of your behaviour on others in different situations, is extremely important if you want to be successful in life and a truly effective business leader.
Self Esteem Business leaders need high levels of self-esteem and a strong sense of self-worth to be resilient in the face of criticism and to hold out for what they believe is right.
How we think about ourselves and how we react to the influences all around us determines our level of self-esteem.
This goes hand in hand with our self-belief (based on our knowledge, skills, and the depth and breadth of our experience) as well as awareness of our principles, values, and needs.
If our self-belief or self-esteem is low this will adversely affect our self-awareness levels.
Those with high self-esteem make us feel valued, respected and at ease.
The higher your personal level of self-esteem as a leader, the more you will be able to do to increase the levels of self-esteem and motivation in your staff.
Support Mechanisms Exceptional leaders develop supportive mechanisms and structures.
They recognise the importance of their own habits, the environment they work in, and the people around them.
To achieve their goals they know that good habits are essential.
They also know the environment in which they work can affect team morale and individual and team performance.
They recognise the importance of their people and they make the time to build and develop personal and working relationships for mutual benefit.
So, if you want to check out where you are in terms of these characteristics and behaviours, ask yourself the following questions:
  • Where do I fit on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high) on my current level of self-awareness?
  • What about self-esteem - where am I on the scale now?
  • What supportive mechanisms and structures do I have in place currently at home?
  • What about at work?
And then take action to improve your situation.
When you start with yourself you not only increase your awareness and become more effective and happier, you get the added bonus of feeling more successful too!
